Butterfly Enthusiasts! Save the dates! I am looking to evaluate interest in 2 Butterfly Counts: Saturday, June 21 and Saturday, July 19, 2025. We are looking for individuals interested in helping to count butterfly populations in two different locations. You don’t need to be an expert but we ask that you have some experience in identifying common butterflies.

Participants will be divided into groups to include a cross-section of experience levels. If you are interested in attending either or both events, please contact Sharon Nethercott. You will be put on a tentative participant list and contacted with more details closer to each event.  nethercottsharon2@gmail.com

The Annual Pinery Butterfly Count – Saturday, June 21, 2025.

It is a NABA Count (North American Butterfly Association) with a $5.00 administration fee per person.

The fee goes towards creating an annual NABA report that provides important information about the geographical distribution and relative population sizes of the species counted. Participants are asked to meet at the Pinery Park Chalet between 8:30-9:00 a.m. Locations for butterfly counting outside of the park are also available. NABA discourages the use of nets and encourages participants to photograph the butterflies they see.  You should have an interest in spending several hours outside. Locations are also available outside of the park. Printouts of maps and recording forms will be provided at Pinery or can be emailed in advance.

Sydenham River Nature Reserve – Saturday, July 19, 2025

2025 will be the first Butterfly Count on the property, south of Alvinston, with the intention of creating a baseline species count. The Nature Reserve Property protects a ribbon of extraordinary plant and animal diversity in a region that is under intense pressure from development.  Please note that there are no maintained trails on the property, and walking can be difficult at times. This will be a half day event beginning at 9:00 a.m., and there is no fee to participate.
