Alan Macnaughton is Vice-President of the Toronto Entomologists’ Association (TEA) https://www.ontarioinsects.org/people/.
His career was not in entomology. He is an amateur. His PhD was in economics, and he spent most of his career as an accounting professor at the University of Waterloo ( https://uwaterloo.ca/school-of-accounting-and-finance/profiles/alan-macnaughton ). He has been interested in moths since his teen years, but has much more time to devote to the hobby since retiring in 2019.
He recieved of the Entomological Society of Canada’s Criddle Award, 2013 (“to recognize the contribution of an outstanding non-professional entomologist to the furtherance of entomology in Canada”: https://esc-sec.ca/awards/criddle/ )
He is active in iNaturalist, with 20,000 Ontario moth observations ( https://inaturalist.ca/people/422488 ).

He holds permits to set up moth traps at Nature Conservancy of Canada properties, Ontario provincial parks, and Ontario conservation authorities.
